I been a citizen in Mumbai for 19 years now ! Its come to be a city I love, respect and look up at with awe.
I have always felt very secure in this city of dreams. I have walked the streets of Mumbai as late as 3 in the morning. Alone, carrying a lot of money and never been accosted by anyone. Travelled by trains alone and always encountered a helpful fellow traveller. Something I would never encounter anywhere else.
I have always felt this is because of the Mumbai Police great policing. However in the last few weeks I have been reading of gross negligence of the Mumbai Police Force. Reading newspaper reports would make me feel compelled to believe them. For instance last weeks police shootout of a bihari brandishing a gun in a commuter bus (BEST) is something I think the police were right in doing. What if the man had shot more innocent civilians in the bus? What if he shot at the police? What if he killed any of them ? What if someone had died of shock in the bus?
The same people complaining about the trigger happy police would have claimed that the police were “ineffective” or “under-powered”. The action taken by the police was swift and potent. It also serves as a deterring action against other such goonda’s from other part’s of India who may try to play out such acts of stupidity in my city.
The Mumbai Police I feel would do well if such individuals were done away with. For example, during the nineties there was a spate of extortions and gangwars occuring. However after the systematic killing of all these thugs. Extortions have become non-existent and so have murders. The Film Industry has been made more professional.
Some times strong action has to be taken and I think the Mumbai Police is doing something good.I hope such action is taken against Terror accused.
No one should be spared for taking the gun and killing innocents.
Jai Maharastra!
